ANTONICS Technology for Wiener Linien
Together with our Austrian partner company Tomek GmbH, which has been active in the field of industrial electronics since 1978, ANTONICS supports the Wiener Linien and subways on their way into the digital radio era. After a tender process and intensive testing phase, the project started in May 2022. By the year 2024, a total of 333 ULF type trams, 117 Silberpfeil type subway trains, 62 V type subway trains, and 144 T type subway trains will be modernized – all vehicles from Siemens Transportation and Alstom or their predecessor organizations.
Equipped for the future
The goal of Wiener Linien is to implement a future-proof solution over the coming years, covering a wide range of GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network bands.
That's Tomek's take on it
For such a project, a strong and competent partner is essential. In the industry, the company is known for developing innovative antennas tailored to specific requirements. This is why the decision quickly fell on ANTONICS.

Overall, approximately 700 OmPlecs®-TOP 200 AMR MF-05 -5- L1-L2 TO antennas will be installed. What's special about these antennas: They were developed very quickly and specifically tailored to the project's tender requirements to fully meet the demands. The tender motivated and resulted in a highly precise, future-proof, yet compact 5G antenna, enabling precise positioning.
Low construction height, maximum technology
A low antenna height of 60mm distinguishes the generation of OmPlecs®-TOP 200 AMR MF-05 -5- L1-L2 TO railway antennas. But it packs a punch: The antenna with three ports integrates various communication bands (open for GSM, GSM-R, UMTS, LTE, and 5G signals), WLAN 2.4/5.8, as well as satellite signals (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou). All these technologies are incorporated into just one antenna. Costly splitters are obsolete due to the selective coupling of the respective frequency ranges via high-quality connectors of the N and TNC series. That means: The ANTONICS solution is much more economical.
Digital radio for high voice quality, fast data transmission, and more
With the transition to digital radio, Wiener Linien is optimizing, among other things, the quality of announcements within the vehicles. This will be welcomed by the approximately two million passengers per day. While the channels of analog radio are limited, far more conversations can be conducted simultaneously via the digital route. Additionally, ANTONICS antennas support much faster data transmission and easier software updates. This expands the services of Wiener Linien, making it contemporary and beneficial for public transport users in Vienna.
